Embryo Freezing

Embryo freezing is the freezing of excess embryos during In-vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment and preserving them for later use. This method is used when couples want to preserve excess embryos, increase the chance of pregnancy, or keep options open for pregnancy at a later date.

Why Used?

Embryo freezing may be preferred if excess embryos are obtained during IVF treatment for various reasons. Some couples may not want to transfer all embryos at the same time if more than one embryo is obtained. Others may choose to freeze embryos in case they are not ready for pregnancy at a particular time.

How is the procedure done?

  1. Embryo Production: During IVF treatment, eggs taken from the woman's ovaries are fertilized with the father's sperm in a laboratory environment and embryos are created.

  2. Embryo Evaluation: In the laboratory, created embryos are usually incubated for several days and their development is monitored. The healthiest and highest quality embryos are selected for transfer.

  3. Freezing: Selected embryos are frozen using a suitable freezing method. Embryos are maintained for long periods in tanks containing liquid nitrogen.

  4. Thawing and Transfer: At a later date, when the couple is ready for pregnancy, the frozen embryos are thawed and transferred to the expectant mother's uterus. This procedure is usually painless and completed in a short time.

Advantages and Disadvantages:

  • Advantages: Embryo freezing increases the chances of pregnancy, allows couples to control the timing of pregnancy, and preserves the health and quality of the embryos.

  • Disadvantages: The embryo freezing procedure can be costly and does not always provide a guaranteed chance of achieving pregnancy.
